OUR LAST DEMONSTRATION FOR 2018
A busy night at Herts & Essex this evening with members & over 30 visitors all looking forward to Patricia Bashford's demonstration "Winter Wonderland".
Everyone was given a warm welcome with mulled wine & mince pies. Members had created some beautiful festive arrangements which were sold at a bargain price of £7.50 each, it goes without saying it was a sell out! Thank you to those members who supported this fundraiser.
The colourful & sparkling sales table looked very inviting & attracted lots of visitors.
Following the usual notices our chairman introduced our demonstrator. As each of Patricia's beautiful designs evolved we were taken into a winter wonderland for sure.
Patricia has kindly given permission to post one of her designs.
We do not meet in January so our next meeting will be our AGM in February.
Sending best wishes for Christmas and a Happy & Peaceful New Year to all our flowery friends.

CHRISTMAS WORKSHOP - Saturday 1st December - 10 members & 2 non members enjoyed a Christmas workshop with Beverly Moore & Sally Cantes.
Eleagnus & Hard Ruscus was used to cover two 12cm floral foam spheres. Tree Ivy, Pittosporum, Hypericum, Spray Carnation, & Santini chrysanthemum we're used in the spheres with added baubles. When the fresh plant material dies off the covered spheres would dry nicely and examples how to, up-cycle were on display.
The door wreath on an oasis foam ring was decorated with blue spruce, lelandii, & tree ivy with natural accessories of lotus pods, cones, orange slices, cinnamon and cranberries threaded onto Flexigrass.
It was also shown how it could also be adapted for a table arrangement adding a candle & spray carnations.
A big Thankyou to Beverly & Sally, our committee members for their help setting up the hall & of course our lovely ladies who made it such an enjoyable day.
There are lots of photographs in the gallery so why not take a peep and you might like to try these designs at home.

NOVEMBER MEETING - 'A Taste of the Orient" was the title for our working evening this month. Members brought along their own choice of plant material & accessories. Everyone was eager to get started but not before collecting their Winter Edition of The Flower Arranger magazine, Christmas cards, Calendars & Diaries. Our publicity notice board also displayed competition schedules for the 2019 Diamond Show and the National Photography competition. It was soon time to get creative, our members enjo...y competitive work and upon completion the designs were judged by Valerie Phillips. During judging there was social time catching up with friends. It was great that several of our members, whilst not taking part, came along to support their fellow members. Judging complete and everyone was eager to see how they had faired. DIDN'T THEY DO WELL! No two designs the same and all with 'A Taste of the Orient' Before the meeting came to a close there was time for Valerie to explain how she had come to her decision on those designs that were placed and also gave critique on those that were not. Well done to all who took part, you are a credit to our club.

Cambridge Group AGM with Hazel McGregor & Gill Smaggasgale.
Cambridge Group of Flower Arranging Clubs, East of England AGM was held today and it was our pleasure to host the event this year with 100 members & guests in attendance including East of England Area President Lionel Clark & Area Chairman Leslie Faiman.
Committee members arrived nice & early all with tasks to get stuck into. Team work was the order of the day !
Nicky prepared a 2 course lunch of soup & ploughmans ably assisted by husband Kevin & Amanada's partner Paul.
Tricia, Sally & Beverly manned the sales table with both functional & festive items on offer.
Rosemary produced the Welcome flowers complete with pumpkin & was on hand as hostess to our speaker & demonstrator.
Sally, following the Halloween theme produced the colourful table arrangements.
Ann did a sterling job selling & folding all those raffle tickets.
Betty, Leoni & Amanda were busy setting tables.
Tricia for standing in for our chairman Sue who unfortunately was feeling unwell today.
Amanda was on the welcome table with newly elected Cambridge Group chairman Carol.
As the doors opened at 10.00am guests started to arrive, tea/coffee & biscuits were served.
There were several stalls selling items ranging from greetings cards, jewellery, accessories & floral metal stands. Pat Woodward had also been busy knitting more scarves and several were purchased.
Following the AGM business it was time to welcome the speaker. Hazel McGregor who gave a presentation telling the story of a little known inspirational lady from Australia, Mum Shirley Smith.
We won't say too much about the life of this amazing women so as not to spoil it for other clubs who may invite Hazel to give the same presentation.
Hazel has given permission to post photographs.
Following an enjoyable lunch we settled down to enjoy Gill Smaggasgale's demonstration entitled 'Herbidaceous'
Gill took us on a floral journey depicting diverse gardens that she had visited, including the Lake District & her home county of Kent to name just two.
The final stage reveal was a feast for the eyes!
Gill has kindly given permission for part of her demonstration to be posted - YOU WILL FIND PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE GALLERY
Winter edition of The Flower Arranger will be available at our November meeting.
Sharing our passion for flower arranging with others!
Several months ago we received an enquiry from a lady who was organising a special birthday weekend for friends. The organiser was planning a surprise for the friends to get involved in craft activities during the weekend and hopefully learn new skills.
Following email exchanges it was decided that a floral bag would be an ideal choice for everyone to create.
Beverly & Leoni arrived at the venue early to set everything up. The room was booked for 2 hours so some prepping was ...done before hand although each stage was demonstrated.
Before the friends entered the room they had no idea what they would find & the expressions on their faces when they saw the foam & flowers was a delight.
Everyone had a bag of Hard Ruscus leaves which were used to cover the foam & decorative pearlised pins added.
It was soon time to add the rest of the plant material, ivy, hebe, sedum, pittosporum, bouvardia, spray roses & spray chrysanthemum.
Everyone was able to be creative with their own choice of placement
For non flower arranging ladies they did brilliantly.
It was great fun & such a lovely group who can now add Flowers, Friendship & Floral Bags as memories of their special birthday weekend. MORE PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY.
Thankyou to Beverly & Leoni for hosting this event.

OCTOBER - This month we welcomed Rekha Naidoo who presented ‘Inspirations of India’.
It was the first time that Rekha had visited our club and what a fabulous and interesting evening it was
We learnt about the culture & iconic landmarks of India which were interpreted with colourful designs all with added sparkle and embellishment associated with Indian dress including Indian weddings.
Rekha has given permission to feature two of her designs. CHECK OUT IMAGES IN THE GALLERY
The first was a spice design. This incorporated cinnamon sticks, cardamom, papaver ginger flowers & beautiful spice coloured spray roses.
The container for the next design was embellished with tiny beadwork, & within the design more embellishment was added with bead decorated spheres all generously given away with the design at the end of the evening.
The vote of thanks this evening was given by our member Hannah Shine who was born and lived in India until she was 14 years of age. Hearing all the stories and seeing the colourful designs brought back so many childhood memories for her.
Hannah gave a heartfelt vote of thanks which for everyone was really different, interesting and enjoyable resulting in a stunning display of arrangements.
Thank you Rekha we hope you will come back again, we would love to hear more of your fascinating stories

OUR VISIT TO ELY CATHEDRAL FLOWER FESTIVAL - 'Kaleidoscope of Life'
41 of us had a wonderful day at Ely Cathedral flower festival.
The flower displays were simply stunning.
As we arrived inside the cathedral just to the right we soon found the display depicting childhood that our members Leoni Braz, Carol Giffen & Maggie Hansford had so beautifully created.
The colourful display using primary colours certainly stood out in the low light of the cathedral.
Photographs of the festival are in our gallery, be prepared there are quite a few so grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy the festival as we did with flowers, fun & friendship.

JUNE MEETING - Summer Floral Fusion was the title of the demonstration by Lorraine Scott who certainly brought some summer colour into the room with her designs, a delightful mix of traditional & modern styles. Lorraine had kindly given permission for one of her designs to be posted.
It was also competition month - traditionally in June with Roses, Roses is the title.
The reason for just roses in the designs is historical ! Many years ago a very well respected member of the club Joyce Morgan donated a special cup to be awarded each June in a competition only using Roses, many years ago this would probably have been roses from members gardens but today there is no stipulation as to the source of the roses just they only roses are featured.
This year Susan Skegg was the proud recipient of this award and Sally Cantes received the quarterly cup.
Well done to everyone who took part.

Brenda Brinn & Maggie Hansford took part in the Flower Festival at St. Mary the Virgin Church - Hatfield Broadoak over the May Bank Holiday. The Theme was relating to water - Inspiration for Maggie's under the sea display came from the Spring Edition of The Flower Arranger magazine photographs & article Hidden Treasures - WAFA 2017. Brenda's fun display Having a Good Splash about was great fun. More Images of both these displays are in the gallery.
The 4th of our classes proved to be another hit with 9 members & 2 visitors today when our chairman Sue Holman demonstrated a traditional pedestal design. The sun was shining and there was a lovely happy atmosohere as the ladies crested their designs, for some it was the first time they had created a traditional pedestal and didn't they do well.
Our 4 sessions have now concluded but judging from the positive feedback we will be planning more in the future.
A big thankyou to Valerie, Beverly, Sally & Sue for their advice, Thankyou's also to Tricia & Rosemary for being our tea/coffee fairies, Hannah for her selection if foliage, Beverly & Hannah for the photographs but most of all THANKYOU to our 12 ladies who were such an appreciative audience. Well done everyone. LOTS OF PHOTOS IN THE GALLERY

Another enjoyable flower arranging class last Saturday,
This time a contemporary pedestal design with Sally Cantes.
Sally showed the technique of weaving variegated China grass through a portion of an aspidistra leaf which was then incorporated into the design.
China grass was also used to add accents to the design either by plaiting or looping.
Other material used were: cornus stems, fatsia, aspidstra, fern and seven Anastasia chrysanths.
The importance of using colour in floral designs was discussed with helpful handouts including a colour wheel.
Thankyou to Hannah & Tricia for the photographs.
The last of the 4 week session will be a traditional pedestal tutored by our chairman Sue Holman.

Today was the 2nd of our flower arranging classes - A European Parallel was demonstrated by committee member Beverly Moore.
The use of different textures was demonstrated in the groundwork of the design using layering & grouping techniques using garden plant material & galax leaves.
Beverly had examples showing how to increase the height of a design by using bamboo canes covered with yarn & how to create a tall water source for shorter stems flowers using kebab sticks & orchid tubes.
Nothing goes to waste, so those annoying little pussy willow buds that fall off from time to time as the stems dry were glued onto a polystyrene sphere to give additional textured interest.
Information handouts relating to the use of texture with a design were well received.
The use if colour will be covered at the next class but to keep on trend the colours chosen for today's parallel included Pantone Colour of The Year Purple.
This type of design is very useful for church window sills, altars & in front of choir stools - one lady took away lots of ideas for a flower festival she is involved with later in the year.
Thankyou to Hannah & Tricia for helping Beverly with the photographs, still more to come.
Our next class will be a contemporary pedestal so watch this space.

FLOWER ARRANGING CLASS 1 - CRESCENTSome of our members new to flower arranging asked if we could provide some lessons. This was the first of 4 classes. Valerie Phillips demonstrated a Crescent Design to 9 members and 2 visitors. As the design was created Valerie explained the Elements & Principles of Design. Handouts were also given on the importance of conditioning together with printed out E&P details. The feedback we have received from the class has been very positive, so a big Thankyou to Valerie for all her advice, tips and knowledge. Our next class will be creating a Parallel design which will also cover the importance of texture within a design. Thankyou to Hannah Shine for taking the photographs (You'll find them in the gallery).

+++IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGRDING 6TH MARCH MEETING +++
Dear Members
It is with regret that we have decided to cancel Tuesday 6th March demonstration by Mr Alan Smith. The approach road and car park are like a skating rink and even if the weather does get a little warmer we can see the ground being treacherous. With concern for our members we have decided to take this very unusual step and promise you Alan will get to see us sometime soon. Apologies, take care.
Please pass this message on to any of your friends who may not regularly check their email addresses. Thank you.
We look forward to seeing you at our April meeting when annual subscriptions will be due - As mentioned at the AGM subscriptions remain as last year £50.

AGM & Chelsea Presentation
Despite the zero temperature we had a good turn out of members for our AGM meeting plus one visitor who was given a very warm welcome.
Reports were given by President Ann Godfrey, Chairman Sue Holman & the all important Treasurer's report by Amanda Anderson.
We had a difficult financial year in 2016 but things have turned around thanks to generous sponsorship, grants, donations & fund raising events, so a big THANKYOU to all those, including our members, who have supported the club.
2017 was a full year of events. We have enjoyed wonderful demonstrations by Nafas demonstrators each month; Fun working evenings & Workshops; Took part in the 'Show your Love' & Lonely Bouquet campaign.
Enjoyed social time at our coffee morning & cheese & wine evening garden meetings.
Taken part in local church flower festivals and library event.
Our outings included Hampton Court Florimania, & some members attended the WAFA show in Barbados & The Festive a flower & Food Show in Blackpool.
Some of our members have also taken part in competitive shows locally & nationally including the RHS Malvern & RHS Chelsea flower show.
A photo book of memories from the year was created by Beverly Moore which will form part of our archives.
Competition cups for the most points gained over the year were presented to Betty Deeks - Advanced Class, Maggie Hansford - Intermediate Class & Ann Jones - Novice Class. Well done ladies and to all those members who take part.
Following the business and social time it was time to experience exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Our members Beverly Moore & Leoni Braz had taken part in the 2017 show in the club class "Cutting edge" and wanted to share the experience with members.
Beverly's visual presentation showed all aspects of their exhibit, from the initial concept based on the Pantone Colour of 2017 'Greenery', to that moment they heard that they had been awarded a silver medal.
It was certainly a fascinating insight into exhibiting which we hope will encourage more of our members to take up competitive challenges.
We now look forward to 2018 where we can all share fun & friendship through flowers.
